New tumour cell sorting device reported in Angewandte Chemie, featured in Science

New work in the Kelley group was published today detailing a device that not only captures circulating tumor cells in blood, but also sorts them into discrete subpopulations depending on levels of surface markers.  This is the first device that allows the visualization of heterogeneity in CTCs present in the bloodstream of cancer patients.  A set of samples collected from prostate cancer patients was analyzed, and significant levels of heterogeneity could be visualized in each patient's CTCs.   The CTCs were sorted according to levels of an epithelial marker, and therefore the heterogeneity observed likely corresponds to progression of the CTCs through the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transistion.
